                                    Spring Break Fever?

Ah, spring. The days get longer, the weather turns warmer and, even if you’re not a college student, dreams of some fun in the sun start dancing in your head. What do you think of when you hear Spring Break? College kids gone wild? Party time? Wet T-shirt contests? Hunky tanned lifeguards? Those old beach party movies of the 50s and 60s?

There are a few old spring break movies set in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, not far  from where I lived: Where the Boys Are (1960)with Connie Francis. The film explores the changing sexual attitudes of the times. Girl Happy (1965) with Elvis Presley and Shelley Fabares. Note to Elvis Presley: Don't fall in love with the mobster's daughter (Shelley Fabares) whom you're being paid to protect over spring break. And Spring Break (1983) a goofy comedy with no plot. The Sure Thing (1985) A college student, John Cusack, plans a cross-country trip to get laid, but ends up traveling with a young woman, Daphne Zuniga. They hate each other, so naturally...

There are other movies set in other locales some not so great B horror flicks (teens doing stupid things, of course.), some dramas and comedies. Other movies are considered ‘spring break’ movies, a few of these will make you groan because they’re so bad but we watched them anyway: National Lampoon’s Animal House, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, American Pie 2, Superbad, Porky’s, National Lampoon’s Van Wilder, Euro Trip, Bachelor Party (1984), Sorority Boys (2002), National Lampoon’s Vacation, Revenge of the Nerds, Beach Blanket Bingo (1965), Road Trip

I didn’t have spring break in college, like the heroine in the story, I was working. Even if I could’ve gotten off, I couldn’t afford to put gas in my car at that time, forget about a vacation. But I do remember one spring when I lived in Florida, I did take a spring break with four girlfriends. The four of us climbed in my girlfriend’s small convertible and we drove to Islamorada in the Keys. We shared one hotel room and hung out on the beach during the day, and partied and flirted with guys at the Tiki bar at night. I remember the name of one of the bands: Big Dick and The Extenders. No kidding.

And no, we didn’t bring anyone back to our room. There wasn’t anyone that interesting. Yes, the Tiki bar did have a bikini contest. No, we didn’t enter. We did talk to someone who did and found out some of these girls do these contests like a profession. They have killer bodies and go from resort to resort, entering these contests and making tons of money.
So do you have any interesting or fun spring break stories??? Or a favorite spring break movie??

Let’s give a warm welcome to my friend and critique partner, Sylvie Kaye! We’ve been exchanging emails about spring cleaning and decided that yes, it is considered exercise. Go ahead and skip the gym on days you're moving furniture and washing windows! Here's what she has to say about it.

Bathing suit season is coming on fast and it's time to lose those winter, hibernation pounds. Spring cleaning is a nifty way to get in shape and kill two birds with one stone. Exercise and get your house in order! Lifting, bending, and twisting while you wash the windows, hang those winter clothes away, and rake the yard.

Once those lawn chairs are out on the deck, patio, or porch, or the hammock is swinging between the trees, don’t forget to treat yourself to a Spring break. What better way than reading and my new release is just in time!

Pick up a digital copy of HONKY TONK MAN by Sylvie Kaye @ TWRP

Blurb:
He has rules for a reason.
Pool shooting, guitar playing, honky tonk singer, Jace Monroe, has a knack for hooking up with the wrong kind of women, rich ones who don't take him or his music seriously. So when he meets a down-to-earth, honey-haired waitress at the Lonesome Steer Honky Tonk, he thinks his luck has finally changed.

Rules have never been her strong suit.
The last place Sunny Brooks wants to be is on her daddy's thriving ranch, but her mother needs her. To escape the constant concern for her mother's health and stay out of her father's overbearing presence, she spends most nights out at the Lonesome Steer Honky Tonk and eventually in the arms of Jace.

But when misconceptions come to light, the sweet music they make together might be silenced forever unless she can show her honky tonk man that some rules are meant to be broken.

ps…another great form of exercise is dancing, check out the Excerpt below:

“Mind if I cut in?”
The familiar voice made her insides hot and quivery.
With a nod from her, Tommy Lee stepped aside and Jace took her in his arms. Sigh.
She stared at his throat and Adam’s apple and inhaled his unique scent of soap and man. Until his large hand cradled the back of her head and pulled her closer.
Her face rested in the crook of his neck, her temple against his jaw. After a minute, she closed her eyes and relaxed into the intimacy of his hold. She felt the rise and fall of his chest, the heat from his body. The hand clasping hers was firm and warm. The same hand that strummed the guitar and made such beautiful music. Could he do that to her body? Strum it, make her hum?
His thighs felt muscled and the bulge between them hard. She smiled, liking that he wanted her. But to what end? Was he looking for a booty call or a relationship? Did she even know which one she wanted? It had been awhile since she’d been with a man; that might explain her shameless fascination with him.
Sunny wished he’d say something. Maybe then she’d stop analyzing and wondering. She tried not to think and concentrated on the music and moving to its rhythm. Which didn’t help at all. His hips moving in time with hers only made her hotter.

Thanks for blogging with me, Sylvie!

I'm borrowing this post from http://www.kathykulig.blogspot.com/ because this looks totally cool!  It's a 5k run where you get chased by ZOMBIES! How fun!  I don't often participate in 5k or other races (mostly because I'm crazy competitive and I'd probably end up hurting myself), but I would totally do this!  Check out the locations and information at http://www.runforyourlives.com/

I’m checking in to hear how all of you are doing with your fitness goals. Many of the new members at the fitness club started off strong in January, but there has been a reduction in numbers the last few weeks. I’m happy to report there are a few new faces that are showing up to classes at least three times a week. Congratulations to those new members.

Let’s hear about how you’re doing and where you’re struggling. I know for me it’s been tough staying away from all the chocolate in the house this month. The big bag of M&M’s my girlfriend (that’s you Tracey!) bought me doesn’t help, but mmmmm. It’s my weakness. What is yours?

Bizarre Pick-up Lines

Just for fun let’s share some of our most bizarre, bad, and sometimes creepy ways guys try to pick us up. And guys I know you get hit on too, so please feel free to share with us! I’ll start with two that actually happened to me.
  1. At a bar a dentist approached and said I had nice teeth, but my smile was too masculine because my incisors were too sharp. He said he could file them down if I wanted to make an appointment at his office. Then he asked if he could buy me a drink. Um, no.
  2. At the local gym, a random guy approached and said I could be CLOSE to a 10 if I had bigger breasts. Then he asked if he could workout with me. Um, no. Notice he said CLOSE to a 10 and not a 10. Nice. (insert eye roll)
What does this have to do with fitness? Absolutely nothing. Let’s hear some of your pick-up lines!

Happy New Year!

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to get fit and you’re considering joining a fitness club, here’s a few tips to consider before you commit to any one particular place.

1.      Consider the location of the fitness club. Look for a club that is close to your office or home, preferably within ten or fifteen minutes from where you live. You don’t want to spend valuable time in the car driving to and from the center.

2.      Consider the cost of joining and the length of time you’re required to commit to a membership. Ask for options and choose the package that best suits your needs, month to month, 3 or 6 months, or a yearly membership.

3.      Visit the club at the exact time you will be using the facility. This way you can ascertain the availability of equipment, the fitness classes offered at that time, whether daycare is provided (if needed), and whether the clientele makes you feel at ease. Check out the locker rooms. Is the club clean and maintained to your satisfaction? If you’re uncomfortable in the setting, don’t join.

4.      Visit more than one facility before making any final decisions. Choose the one that best suits your needs.

This is not a tip, but it’s something I witness over and over again in any fitness club. There will be “regular” members you will no doubt encounter. This may seem like an exclusive club of mostly fit people who talk, joke, and exercise together. Do not feel intimidated by these so-called “regulars.” They started out just like you. They are generally a friendly bunch who will help with any questions you may have. But I admit they may ignore you at first. They are not being mean or cliquish. Look at it from their perspective. Many people join a fitness club, but very few stick around for any length of time. (I hate admitting that.) The “regulars” don’t want to invest their time to get to know you when in most cases, after two or three weeks, they may never see you again. Don’t be that newbie! Show up and exercise day after day, week after week, month after month. I promise you will no longer feel uneasy around the “regulars” because YOU will be one of them. It’s a great way to make friends and they can help to keep you motivated to stick to your fitness goals.

Let me know how you make out.  Happy New Year and Get Moving!
